Inauguration Day in Chile

Monday was a federal holiday, and my wife and her mother canned 11 jars of home-made salsa, something that is hard to get here in Chile. It tastes really good.

Today at the Embassy, we gathered in the main auditorium to watch the inauguration proceedings live. The cafeteria sold box lunches, and we ate our meal while watching.

The staff responds after the oath of office.

The inauguration speech.

Until the formal portraits arrive from Washington, we use the President's and Vice-President's official Senate portraits.

On the way out the Embassy gate, the Carabineros were out in force to provide security for a planned protest outside the Embassy. The protesters had applied for an official permit, but nobody was really quite sure what they were going to protest. Apparently they weren't either, because nobody showed up, and as I left the compound just before the scheduled protest time, only the police were in sight.

Back at home, I discovered that my wife had already gone to volunteer at the orphanage, and our cat was sequestered inside her kitty jungle gym, in no mood to play.
